Welcome to the 1st Okehampton Scout Group Website
Our Group is based in the market town of Okehampton which is situated on the edge of Dartmoor. Our location enables us to do many exciting outdoor activities including camps, hikes (at night too!), canyoning, high ropes, archery, bivouac building, rock climbing, canoeing, cycling, wide games to name a few.
To help our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts to complete their badge requirements we also arrange local visits to the Fire Station, table tennis club, supermarkets, library, care homes, tennis courts, gym, parks and woodlands.
We are also fortunate enough to have a purpose-built hut just outside the main town centre where we hold our weekly meetings. Together with a flat grass area and small woodland this enables us to have indoor sleepovers or outdoor camps all year round. As well as facilitating cooking, crafts, gardening, diy, wildlife care, hosting guest speakers, pioneering, camp fires and outdoor games.
Combined with visits further afield to museums, theatre, adventure play areas in Exeter, the Cathedral, County Council Offices, aquariums and bigger District camps. You can see that we have a jam-packed program of fun, adventurous and exhilarating activities!
The 1st Okehampton Scout Group consists of four sections…
Squirrels are the youngest and newest section of the Scouting movement and is for young people aged 4 – 6.
Our Squirrel Drey meets on a Tuesday night from 4:45pm – 5:45pm.
Beavers are young people aged 6 to 8 who:
- Master new skills and try new things
- Have fun and go on adventures
- Make friends
- Are curious about the world around them
- Help others and make a difference, on their own doorstops and beyond
Every week, they gather in groups called Beaver Colonies to hop, skip and jump their way through lots of different games and activities – having lots of fun along the way.
Our Beaver Colony meets on a Wednesday night from 6pm – 7:30pm.
Cubs are young people aged 8 to 10½ .They gather in groups called Cub Packs to take part in lots of interesting and more challenging activities.
Cubs learn by doing. Some of the skills they develop will be practical, like knowing how to cook a delicious meal or give someone first aid.
Our Cub Pack meets on a Tuesday night from 6pm – 7:30pm.
Scouts are a go-getting group of young people aged 10 ½ to 14. Being a Scout is all about discovering the world on your own terms and making the most of what you have.
Alongside their new friends, they’ll master the skills that will help them weather the storms of life, and try things they’d never get the chance to do at home or at school.
Our Scout Troop meets on a Thursday Night from 7pm – 8:30pm.
Explorers is the final stage of a young persons scouting journey before becoming an adult. They are aged 14 – 18 and are largely independent in the activities they complete. just like the other sections, Explorers can work towards badges and top awards and also have to option of participitating in the Young Leader Scheme.
Explorers are organised at a district level. “The Lost Explorers” unit currently meets forghtnightly, alternating between a Wednesday and a Friday 7:45pm – 9:15pm at our hut in Okehampton.
All of our sections work towards a huge variety of badges whether it is Animal carer, Book Reader, Communicator, Road Safety, Environmental, Local Knowledge, Home Help, Photographer, Chef, Outdoor… You name it, we’ve got a badge for it – over 200 of them actually. Beavers, Cubs and Scouts work together on badges at their weekly meetings, away at camps and events or at home.
